Pickles anyone? For years, I have sampled all sorts of variations of pickles looking for something like I remembered from my earliest days. Nothing ever came close. Maybe it's the mustard seed in them, maybe it's the generous amount of brown sugar. Whatever it was, nothing could compare to this particular recipe.
My mother once told me that this was a recipe that my dad loved, that Mom then got from Grandmother Welch. I would imagine that the recipe has been in use for at least a century now.
I never have a turkey sandwich after Thanksgiving without longing for these. Navy bean soup? Ohhhh yeah! Have to add some in!!
I had great fun making these and was pleased with the way they came out. As soon as I made up the "sauce" that would go into them, I could begin to recall some memories.
Once they were canned and then opened, the fragrance of these distinctive pickles opened up the floodgates, not only to tastes, but memories and moments of enjoyment and some times with family members now gone.
When I gave a jar to Marty and we opened it, she immediately mentioned how good Granny's hamburgers always tasted with these green tomato pickles on them.
Sometimes it's the simple things that bring a great deal of joy. Make some pickles . . . create some memories.
I included the recipe with some hints along the way, in case you want to try them yourself. If you do, please pass along your reaction.
I decided that ten or fifteen years was long enough to go without some green tomato pickles.
I have such wonderful memories of the pickles from when Mom made them when I was a kid. We made them once about 30 years ago, but not since, and Mom's last batch was probably over a decade ago, so . . .
